BPIF seeks input for new industry standard

The British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF) has issued a call to the industry to support its new Level 2 print operative standard.

The Level 2 print standard will have three options: pre-press operative, press operative and post press operative

Last July, the BPIF received confirmation that the employer-led submission to develop a new apprenticeship standard for a Level 2 print operative had been successful.

The standard follows the same format as the Level 3 print technician standard approved in May 2019, and will act as a core Level 2 print standard with three options: pre-press operative, press operative and post press operative.

The BPIF has been working with the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE) to build content for this new standard, with the aim of addressing print’s key pints.

Core to this standard are a list of duties, which the BPIF says are effectively a job description and a list of the knowledge, skills and behaviours (KSBs) it would want a successful apprentice to have.

We now need your input to ensure that we have the right standard for our industry

Ursula Daly, programme director at the BPIF, is now urging the wider industry to get involved to ensure the standard matches the requirements of the market.

“We now need your input to ensure that we have the right standard for our industry,” Daly says.

“The Level 2 Print Operative is intended to be the number 2, the assistant and as such plays an important role in our industry.

“This level 2 reflects a large number of workers in print, often the backbone of the factory and it is important that we get this right and that is why we need you to provide us with your input.”
