Peter Scott founded Peter Scott Printers in 1960 from his front living room using ‘de-mob’ money from military service
Burnley-based Peter Scott Printers has paid tribute to its founder Peter Scott following news that he has passed away aged 89 after a short illness.
Scott founded the company 60 years ago in his front living room using his ‘de-mob’ money from military service. The business moved into a chapel before taking premises at Darnley Street in Burnley. A fire prompted another move to Billington Road.
In 2015, the business celebrated its 55th year with a celebration for previous and current staff with over 30 people attending a celebratory meal hosted by Scott. The founder, who retired in 1992 and returned for a short period in 1998, was presented with a special bottle of whiskey by the current directors.
On receiving this gift, he said: “I can’t thank the current team enough for keeping the proud name of Peter Scott Printers flying high.”
In 2020, the company moved to its current location, a £1m factory in Heasandford Industrial Estate, in a £200,000 move.
Today, Peter Scott Printers is one of the last remaining large lithographic printing businesses in Burnley, from a total of 14 in 1998 – a legacy left by Scott.
On the news of Scott’s passing, Murray Dawson, current owner of Peter Scott Printers, says: “We were still in touch with Peter and always wished him and his family well. Peter was the one who lent me £5,000 in 1991 to set up sister company Scott Dawson Advertising, hence the Scott.
“I have a lot of respect for him, and whilst saddened by his death still have fond memories of his phrase ‘nothing happens ‘til someone sells something!”
Scott enjoyed retirement having moved to the coastal town of Banff in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
